  • All is calm, all is bright. Finals week is finally over, and this concludes the Fall 2019 semester. Reshelving the end-of-semester returns continues, as does the work of collection development, exhibition planning, cataloging, metadata creation, and many more library tasks. We wish the students, faculty, and staff a restful and restorative break! #fall2019semesterdone #millsmusiclibrary
  • 2019 was the year Lizzo continued her ascent—from having played Yum Yum Fest, to sharing a bill at @majesticmadison, then headlining shows at Majestic, to selling out a show at @thesylvee, to put her trajectory into a Madison performance space context. Her songs started appearing in commercials—you’ve likely heard “Juice” and “Water Me,” whether you know it or not. She released Cuz I Love You, her third album but major label debut in April through Nice Life and Atlantic Records, and then a strange thing happened. ⁣
⁣
Her song “Truth Hurts,” which she released originally in September 2017, became popular on TikTok, which lead to it being re-released as a single. It entered the Billboard Hot 100 in May, reached number one in September, and stayed at the top for four weeks, becoming the longest-leading rap number one single by a female artist unaccompanied by another act in the chart’s history. @billboard It’s been nominated for three Grammy Awards: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance. @recordingacademy Atlantic released a Deluxe Edition of Cuz I Love You, with “Truth Hurts” included, and that is the version we have. Last week, @lizzobeeating was named TIME’s 2019 Entertainer of the Year, and Entertainment Weekly chose her as one of their Entertainers of the Year. @time @entertainmentweekly This week, she is the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. @nbcsnl #lizzo #lizzotruthhurts #truthhurts #cuziloveyou #entertaineroftheyear #millsmusiclibrary
  • We’re seeing this expression on lots of student faces in the library as finals week continues! This image is by Maurice Sendak, a design for show curtain he created for the 1983 production of The Nutcracker by Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle, gracing the cover of this new book, which was published on the occasion of an exhibition held at the Morgan Library & Museum, New York, June 14 - October 6, 2019. @themorganlibrary ⁣
Drawing the Curtain: Maurice Sendak's Designs for Opera and Ballet, by Rachel Federman; with contributions by Liam Doona, Christopher Mattaliano, Avi Steinberg. New York: The Morgan Library & Museum; Munich; London; New York: DelMonico Books/Prestel, 2019. [ML141.N4 S46 2019]⁣
⁣
From the publisher: “Maurice Sendak is well-known for his acclaimed children's books, but he was also an avid music lover and designed a number of opera and ballet productions, among them Mozart's Magic Flute, Janácek's Cunning Little Vixen, Prokofiev's Love for Three Oranges, Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, and an opera composed by Oliver Knussen based on Where the Wild Things Are. This book brings together nearly one hundred and fifty drawings from among the more than nine hundred in the Morgan Library & Museum's collection, including preliminary sketches, storyboards, finished watercolors, and painted dioramas. The essays discuss the importance of music and movement to Sendak, the artworks that inspired his stage designs, and the historical and biographical contexts that formed them.” #mauricesendak #thenutcracker #morganlibraryandmuseum #millsmusiclibrary ⁣
  • It’s Study Day at @uwmadison, the day between Last Class Day and Exam Week. Our reading room is packed with patrons cramming and racing to finish papers and projects, but all is calm in our stacks—especially in the last several sections, where the MT titles are shelved. The Library of Congress Classification subclass MT is for Instruction and Study, officially, but we like to tell patrons to think of the T as standing for teaching, theory, or technique. ⁣
⁣
The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 2d Ed., definition of “study” begins: “An instrumental piece, usually of some difficulty and most often for a stringed keyboard instrument, designed primarily to exploit and perfect a chosen facet of performing technique, but the better for having some musical interest.” It is used interchangeably with étude, although many composers have written études that hew 关r to concert works than exercises. ⁣

  • Marie Fredriksson, who co-founded the Swedish pop group Roxette with Per Gessle in 1986, died yesterday in Sweden after living with cancer for 17 years. She was 61 years old. We are memorializing her with a rarity we were surprised to find in our vinyl holdings—the group’s US 12” single of “The Look,” their 1989 song that topped the charts in 25 countries, and was the first of their four number ones on the Billboard Hot 100. [BIB 7408955] According to WorldCat, we are one of only three libraries worldwide with this record—we see you, @mlbssa 👀 @realroxette #mariefredriksson #roxette #thelook #millsmusiclibrary
